Mentally Focused Theatre

The Programme

About
We started this programme in 2014, after receiving funding from the European Union to run a series of courses across Hampshire. We worked with around 40 unemployed adults on a 10 week course that focused on developing self confidence, communication and presentation skills with the aim of ultimately getting them back into work or training.

After great results from the programme in 2014 we started working with multiple partners (Radian, Sanctuary Housing, The University of Winchester, Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust ), delivering 5, 6 and 10 week courses to unemployed and economically inactive participants.

Since then the programme has developed and we regularly run confidence building and presentation skills workshops with trainee's and apprentices at Hampshire County Council as well as business management students at The University of Southampton.

The programme currently runs in partnership with Yateley Adult & Community Learning and Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Recovery College
Structure
We typically run this programme across six consecutive weeks. Each session usually last 2 hours with a short break halfway through. The 6 weeks are split into sections covering the following areas:

Week 1
-Building trust and setting individual and group goals
Week 2
-Developing confidence techniques
Week 3
-Interview techniques and role-play
Week 4
-Presentation skills
Week 5
- Mindfulness and managing stress
Week 6
- Group presentations, feedback and what's next?
Who is it for?
The programme is aimed predominately at adults (18+) who are either unemployed or economically inactive. However some of our bespoke courses and workshops can target young adults (16+). The programme is structured to gently ease participants back into a routine, working through basic tasks and exercises, therefore no previous knowledge or prior training courses are required to take part.
What it involves
The drama-based methods used on the programme are more personalised, less reliant on literacy and verbal expression, and help address thoughts, feelings and behaviours. These practical techniques enable participants to practice newly acquired skills and roles, as well as self-reflection.

Participants start off by getting to know each other through simple team building exercises and games that work towards building a safe and positive environment. The group are then encouraged to work in pairs and small groups through a series of tasks and exercises. These include exploring positive body language, interview techniques, communication role plays and mindfulness. The culmination of the course is a small group presentation in which participants highlight their main learning points and achievements.

We only have two guidelines for individuals taking part; 'give it a go' and 'HAVE FUN'
